For years helmets were only worn by warriors to protect against club, ax, sword, spear, arrow or bullet. In the motorized era, the helmet also proved to be useful as a reinforcement against the dangers on the road. Motorcycle cap, racing hood, half helmet, jet helmet, full-face helmet, motorcycle helmet plus many less successful intermediate shapes came onto the market.

Head protection for drivers initially consisted only of a cotton or leather hood with loose goggles. The first motorcycle racers copied the use of a leather cap from the pioneers of aviation. The ordinary motorcyclists, in turn, mimicked what the drivers put on their heads.

From the 1930s, the first hardened helmets were invented, either from natural materials, such as leather and cork, or from synthetic materials. Herbert Johnson Co. also made copies with a visor.

The closed racing helmet was introduced in Formula 1 by the American Dan Gurney in 1968. In American racing culture people had already driven a closed racing helmet from the Bell brand for some time. The helmet's debut took place, as a test, at the Zandvoort circuit on 21/22 June of that year. Two weeks later at the Nürburgring, the helmet was raced for the first time in rainy conditions.

Schuberth is one of the best known manufacturers of helmets. The company was founded in 1922 as a furniture factory in Germany. Schuberth also makes the helmets that BMW supplies under its own brand name and is a supplier to 65 armies. In Formula 1, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez and Pascal Wehrlein, among others, drive with a Schuberth racing helmet.
