A station wagon is a car model that is larger than the standard model of the same car brand. The rear of the car is raised up to the bumper and the rear is often flat. Different car brands have different names for this version of the car. BMW, Chrysler, Toyota and Subaru call this model a Touring; Suzuki a Wagon; Volkswagen is a Variant and Audi calls the station model an Avant.

The first station wagon was built in the USA around 1910. A number of independent manufacturers made a special wooden back on the existing Ford Model T. These stations were mainly used as taxis around train depots, the large trunk was needed for the amount of luggage. After a while, various car manufacturers began to design their own station wagons. In 1923 the first official station in the production line of the Star brand arrived.

Because much of the first station wagons consisted of wood, constant maintenance was required on the bodywork. In 1922, the first mass-produced car to use a steel sedan body was launched. In 1935 Chevrolet released the first car to replace the wooden parts with steel, the Chevrolet Suburban. From 1951, almost all stations were made of steel.

Station wagons sold well from the 1950s to the 1970s, after which sales declined somewhat as minivans and SUVs grew in popularity. The range of cars with a large loading space was thus increased.

Popular, widely sold models are the Volkswagen Passat Variant, the Audi A4 Avant, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer, the Toyota Avensis Wagon, the Peugeot 308 SW and the Volvo V60.
